What is Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a popular cosmetic procedure that uses concentrated beams of light to target and disable hair follicles, ultimately reducing the growth of unwanted hair. The procedure is performed using a handheld device that emits pulses of laser energy onto the targeted area of the skin. The laser’s energy is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicles, heating them up and damaging their ability to produce new hair.

During the treatment, a cooling gel or device may be used to protect the surrounding skin and minimize discomfort. The procedure is most effective on dark, coarse hair, as the laser’s energy is primarily absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicles. Lighter hair colors or fine hair may not respond as effectively to laser hair removal.

Multiple sessions are typically required to achieve optimal results since hair grows in cycles and the laser can only effectively target hair follicles in the active growth phase. The exact number of sessions needed varies depending on factors such as the treatment area, hair thickness, and individual response to the treatment.

Laser hair removal is commonly performed on areas such as the legs, underarms, bikini line, face, and back. It offers several advantages over traditional hair removal methods like shaving, waxing, or using depilatory creams. These advantages include longer-lasting results, reduced ingrown hairs, and the potential for permanent hair reduction over time.

Overall, laser hair removal provides a convenient and effective solution for individuals seeking long-term hair reduction or removal, offering the potential for smoother, hair-free skin with minimal maintenance.

How many treatment will I need?

The average timeline between treatments is 4-6 weeks. Each area is an average of 6-8 treatments.

What is the Pre and Post care?

Pre-Care:

1. Avoid sun exposure: Protect the treatment area from sun exposure for at least four weeks before the procedure. This includes tanning beds and self-tanning products. Sun exposure can increase the risk of complications and interfere with the effectiveness of the treatment.

2. Shave the treatment area: It is recommended to shave the treatment area one to two days before your laser hair removal session. This helps the laser target the hair follicles more effectively while minimizing discomfort during the procedure.

3. Avoid other hair removal methods: Refrain from plucking, waxing, or using hair removal creams on the treatment area for at least 4 weeks prior to the procedure. These methods remove the hair from the root, which is the target for laser hair removal.

4. Inform your provider: Make sure to inform your laser technician about any medications, skin conditions, or recent cosmetic treatments you have undergone. This will help them determine if you are a suitable candidate for laser hair removal and adjust the treatment accordingly.

5. Make sure you have not taken any antibiotics in the last 2 weeks or that you have not used any retinoids/tretinoin/vitamin A on the area in the last 7 days. This increases the risk of burning considerably.

Post-Care:

1. Protect the treated area from sun exposure: After laser hair removal, the treated skin may be more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher on the treated area when going outside. This should be followed for several weeks post-treatment.

2. Avoid heat and friction: Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and activities that cause excessive sweating for 24-48 hours after the procedure. Also, avoid using abrasive scrubs or loofahs on the treated area to prevent irritation.

3. Moisturize the skin: Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to the treated area to keep the skin hydrated and soothe any redness or irritation. Choose products recommended by your laser technician or dermatologist.

4. Avoid picking or scratching: Allow any crusting or scabbing that may occur to heal naturally. Avoid picking, scratching, or exfoliating the treated area to prevent potential complications or scarring.

5. Follow the recommended treatment schedule: Multiple laser hair removal sessions are typically required for optimal results. Adhere to the recommended treatment schedule provided by your laser technician to ensure the best outcome.

I have PCOS/hormonal hair growth, will laser hair removal work for me?

Coming from personal experience, YES! It may take more treatments but as you’re working through your treatments, your hair will get thinner, lighter, and come back slower.
